NASA LAUNCHES NEW
WEB SITE TO INCREASE INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES IN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING FIELDS
NASA along with the American Society for Engineering
Education (ASEE) has launched a new Web site. The site is designed to increase
undergraduate and graduate student access to research and internship
opportunities in science and engineering fields.
The Web site, www.tech-interns.com,
provides a free, Web-based, informational resource that includes technical
research and internship opportunities available in over 200 private companies,
non-profit organizations and government-sponsored research centers and
laboratories.
Specific features of this Web site include:
v
A searchable database of internships, co-op and other research
opportunities available throughout the year, across the country, and in over
twenty different specific engineering and science disciplines;
v Two dozen links to additional resources on technical jobs, career-development tools, scholarships and financial aid;
v Message boards for posting program announcements and questions concerning internships.
The impetus for this partnership between ASEE and NASA is the recognition that research work experience is a critical element in the successful career development of students studying engineering and science.
The ASEE-NASA collaboration was also the direct result of an effort spearheaded by NASA's Professional Development Program Class of 2000-2001. Dr. Margaret Tuma, of NASA's Glenn Research Center, Cleveland, explained, "Our Professional Development Program class recognized the need for a free, accessible clearing-house of learning opportunities or internships for young people interested in science and engineering. We took this on as a 'class project'. The cooperation and support we received from ASEE, NASA's Office of Space Science and NASA's Education Division was fantastic."
The Web site is another example of NASA's commitment to education excellence and workforce development.
The site will serve as a source of information
involving internships and research experiences related to NASA's research
mission, as well as related research activities and partner organizations
aligned with the nation's research and development priorities.
