Tom:

Thank you again for supporting Pat Kozak and me in our travel to the USGS Spectroscopy Laboratory in Denver April 4-7, 2000. I spent one day and Pat stayed on for two additional days.

While there we were hosted by Dr. Roger Clark, who is perhaps the best-known scientist among users of NASA’s AVIRIS imaging spectrometer data. The outcome of the visit included the following:

              1) We successfully ran the USGS Tetracorder algorithm for mapping mineral distributions in AVIRIS images of Pat Kozak’s thesis area in Death Valley.

2) We made arrangements to install some of the USGS spectral processing routines on Unix workstations here at SDSM&T in order to continue to use the applications developed at USGS.

3) We plan to exchange mineral samples and laboratory spectra with the USGS in order to enhance their on-line digital spectral library.

4) We expect to make future visits to the USGS Spectroscopy Laboratory for processing imagery related to research on metamorphic processes or research on the Black Hills and Prairie Pothole regions.

We are in the process of posting mineral maps that were generated as a result of this trip on our website. I will notify you when that is complete.

Thanks for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Ed Duke
